Single Plate Clutch Components and Working:

A Clutch is a mechanical device that is used to transmit rotating motion or torque from one shaft to another shaft when required.

The clutch is a mechanical device used to connect or disconnect the driven shaft from the driving shaft at the will of the operator while power is transmitted from driving to driven shaft.

Clutch is mounted between driving and driven shaft and power is transmitted from one shaft to another shaft which is required to be started and stopped frequently.

In automobile, where a vehicle can be stopped for a while or to change the gear, the requirement is that the driven shaft should stop the engine should run naturally under the no-load condition. This is achieved by using clutch mounted between engine shaft and gearbox shaft and which is operated by a lever.

The components of Single Plate Clutch are as follows:

  1. Flywheel
  2. Engine shaft
  3. Clutch shaft
  4. Bearing
  5. Clutch Plate
  6. Clutch Pedal.
  7. Friction Lining
  8. Pressure Plate
  9. Clutch spring

The Clutch provides a temporary connection between the input and output shaft. The clutch lies between the engine and the gearbox.

Working of Single Plate Clutch:

A single plate consists of various elements, such as pressure plate, friction plate (clutch plate), driving shaft, splined driven shaft, splined hub, brass bush, etc.

A single plate clutch is shown in the figure. The driving plate includes a pressure plate, whereas the driven plate is a friction plate.

The friction plate has a ring of the friction material on either side as shown in the figure. The friction plate is attached to a splined hub which is free to slide axially on the splined driven shaft and rotates along with the driven shaft. 

The spring is placed between the pressure plate and cover. Brass bush is press-fitted inside the pressure plate so that it can rotate freely on the driven shaft.

When the clutch pedal is pressed, the disengagement sleeve moves to the right and the clutch is disengaged. Under this condition, there is no axial force between the friction plate and the pressure plate. Hence, the driving shaft rotates without driving the clutch and the driven shaft. 

When the clutch pedal is pressed, it moves the sleeve to the left and the clutch plate engages to the driven shaft. Axial spring force compresses friction plate and pressure plate. The torque is transmitted from driving to the driven shaft because of the friction between the pressure plate and the friction plate. The engagement and disengagement of the sleeve are done by foot pedal through linkage.

A single plate clutch is used where large radial space is available. Thus, a sufficient surface area is available for heat dissipation which is produced at the surface due to friction. Hence, no cooling oil is required. For this reason, the single-plate clutch is sometimes called a dry clutches.


It is used where large radial space is available such as trucks, buses, cars, etc.
