What Is Multi Plate Clutch - Types, Working, and Parts List:


A multi-plate clutch is similar to the single-plate clutch but only the difference is that it has more number of frictional and metal plates. The increase in the number of friction surfaces obviously increases the capacity of the clutch to transmit torque, the size remaining fixed.

Multi-Plate Clutch Construction and Working:

The multi-plate clutch consists of two sets of frictional plates as shown in Fig. One set slides in the grooves cut on the flywheel and it rotates with flywheel (driving shaft). other set moves on splines made on the hub of the pressure plate and it rotates with pressure plate assembly during engaged position. Both types of frictional plates are arranged in an alternate manner one on the pressure plate and other on the flywheel and so on.

To transmit the same torque the diameters of plates are reduced in comparison to the single-plate clutch. Therefore, this type of clutch is used in heavy transport vehicles and racing cars where high torque is to be transmitted. It is also used in the case of motorcycles and scooters where space available is limited.

As shown in the figure, the clutch in engages position, while the flywheel rotating, the frictional plates of set one is rotating with flywheel. This causes the frictional plates of set two also rotate. The clutch shaft is then rotated. When the pedal is pressed, the flywheel continues to rotate. The frictional plates are then released. This happens because they are not fully pressed by the pressure plates. The frictional plates are thus free of rotation. The clutch shaft also stops rotating.

Working:

A multi-plate clutch is a type of a clutch in which the multiple clutch plates are used to make frictional contact with the flywheel of the engine in order to transmit power between the engine shaft and the transmission shaft of an automobile vehicle. A multi-plate clutch is used in automobiles and in machinery were hired to work out which is required in bikes and scooters. 

The multi-plate clutch is used due to the limitation of a compact gearbox used in bikes and scooter as we know it clutch is the most important integral part of powertrain as it is used to transmit the power from the engine shaft to the transmission shaft for further shifting the drive to require to work or speed output but what is the need for a multi-plate clutch.

Where there is a need of high to work out what like in a pickup truck a single plate clutch fails to provide that much frictional force that is required to provide such a high torque so in the heavy vehicle light pickup trucks multi-plate clutches are used in two-wheeler vehicles like bikes and scooters there is a problem of packaging due to their small size. 

So, to fulfill the need of required to work output instead of a large single plate clutch a multi-plate clutch having small clutch plates are used to transmit power between the engine shaft and the transmission shaft when there is the engagement of the clutch multiple plates of a multi-plate clutch provides a more frictional force between the flywheel and the pressure plate as compared to the single-plate clutch due to which the chances of slip are almost negligible and a multi-plate clutch. 

When we go to the terrain having different ups and downs or different throw challenges or multi-plate clutch is required to maintain the smooth and steady engagement between the engine and the transmission shaft which in turn continuously provides the required amount of torque and speed to the vehicle the efforts required by the driver on the clutch pedal in order to engage or disengage the is less and the multi-plate clutches compared to the single played clutch.

Advantages of Multi-plate clutch:


  • Increased torque transmission capacity is obtained.
  • It is suitable for heavy vehicles.
  • Increase in better acceleration.
  • It is highly reliable.
  • The diameter is reduced as it has more friction surface which reduces the size of the clutch assembly.
  • Decrease the weight of the clutch.
  • The pedal effort to operate the clutch is decreased.

Disadvantages Of Multi-plate Clutch:


  • The weight of multi-Plate clutches is heavy.
  • The multi-plate clutch system is generating more heat as they consist of a large number of the frictional plates.
  • Multi-plate clutches are much expensive.
Application of Multi-Plate Clutch:

  1. They are also used in heavy machinery such as excavators, crawlers, bulldozers & tanks, etc.
  2. Multi-plate clutches are used in trucks, locomotive engines, ships, automobiles, and industrial machines.
  3. They are greatly found in drag racings as well as in Formula one cars.
